Wind farm to lower taxes - When the proposed Wildcat Wind Farm goes on the property tax rolls in Tipton County in 2013, property owners throughout the county will realize a savings. Homes with an assessed value of $50,000 will see a savings of $4.87 per year in Cicero and Jefferson townships and $9.63 in Wildcat Township.

In paragraph 5, a statement is made that the windfarm has a capacity of 200MW.  In paragraph 6, the statement is made that this windfarm will produce enough electricity to power 45,000 homes for a year.

Landbased windfarms have a capacity factor of about 30% in the most prime locations.  A 200MW windfarm will make 200 x 1000 x 8760 x .3 = 525.6 million KWh per year.  That amounts to 525,600,000 / 30 / 45,000 = 389.3 KWh / month / home.  I realize Indiana is cooler than southeast Texas and does not use as much air conditioning power but I seriously doubt 389.3KWh will be all the electrical energy used by an average home in one month.

member photo The 525,600,000 kWh per year number is correct for the wind farm output using your assumptions. Divide that by 45,000 homes gives an annual usage of about 11,680 kWh per year. Divide that by 12 months in a year (not 30 as you suggest) gives about 973 kWh per month. That certainly is in the ballpark of what an average US home consumes, according to the Energy Information Administration.

member photo Thanks for noticing the error. I was going to calculate per day then realized I wanted to go per month and eliminated the wrong number.
