The communications system architecture is based on the fundamental property of ethernet networks that allow different sessions on the same interface and with different protocols. That's the biggest revolution that provides IT (Information Technology) to networks of computers within an electricity substation, which was unthinkable until very recently.

In this post you can download a diagram of the architecture levels for communications purposes.

The attached diagram can see the different sessions that will withstand the IEDs that belong to the network and operating protocols in each. This is an example of what can be done, but a real example, taken from a strictly implemented and operating experience.(unfortunately the system does not allow us to show images in post)

member photo The choice of an Ethernet physical layer is economical, but not particularly critical. What is critical are the upper layers of the protocol:

Sufficiently flexible that they are not boxed in to lower level transport and physical layers. Given the ubiquity of TCP/IP compatibility with TCP/IP as a transport/network protocol is critical.

Robust operation. This is the tricky part. It involves matters of:
Data integrity, data security, reliable delivery, temporal tolerance, and resistance to attack.

member photo Right. I mean that the multi-session capability (and multi protocol) seems to be the key for getting data to different applications. Not mind to be ethernet per-se or other format.
