OMRF turns on rooftop wind farm - Amid 30 miles per hour gusts, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation officials flipped the switch Tuesday on a rooftop wind farm that will help supply power to the foundation's research tower.

18 turbines at 4.5KW each amounts to 81KW.  At a total cost of $1mn, that is $12,346/nameplate KW.  Ignoring any O&M costs and figuring a 20 year life and 85,500KWh per year, 58.5 cents per KWh.

$1mn could have built about 700KW of combined heat and power, natural gas engine facility that would have had the potential to have an overall thermal efficiency approaching 90% when the building heating/chilling energy use is considered and would have delivered about 6,000,000KWh to the facility while putting less CO2 into the atmosphere than the backup power needed to makeup for the 12% capacity factor of the wind turbines.
