The problem lies in the fact that except in Soviet Union , in the past or in China at present, there are very few Engineers in Politics Engineers live a active life, are normally have secure lives and are upper crust of society as far as money is concerned. They dislike politics and most think it is waste of time. But without politics nothing changes. So we have seen actors/ Lawyers ocupying that space which should normally be thespace of top technocrates ,ON ISSUES RELATED TO TECHNOLOLGY . Even Industrialists dislike politics.

Hence in democratic countries often have leaders from various sectors of society who cater to interests of those who fund their election budget . .So if there is wind power lobby active why should the politicians advocate building railroads to reduce the pollution?

After all in any democartic society  89 % persons are simply silent spectators  on policiesand the reaining are either in Govt or politicians and  in lobby.

There are ofcourse some professional  noise makers who go to attend hearings of this or that type. Rest simply sleep at home.

It is time Engineers take interest  in politics.

member photo If we compare the society with a water reservoir, the topmost layer is active and due to that only it is at the top. The bottom layers are calm, and are at bottom because they are willing to be there only. In the nations like India, the politics is taken very lightly because the politicians are willing to go up words any how and for that no special skill or contribution is needed. This attitude has been developed a thumb rule that those who want to contribute should avoid politics or those who want to be in the politics should avoid contribution. Engineers are the real active contributors for the society, and any society is graded as how much it is engineered. For nations like India, many of the few toppers are engineers but the rest bottom level will take time to be an engineered society, as ours is a young nation and by nature we are not aggressive. Till then our politics will be almost without engineers. Another thing is majority of the engineers is employed and involved in manufacturing and soft wares, which have a very limited contact with the people, so as the contact is less, the influence is also less and politics starts from the doors of sociology. This may be the another reason for the Engineers not to involve in politics.

member photo This is no excuse for not being in politics. All are members of society and being in top means one needs to involve with the lower bottom as well. The fact is that we just dislike it. I myself was a member of Youth Congress before I went to IIT. It is a different matter that subsequent events changed my opinion about that party. If you look up portugal poilitics you will find lot of engineers in it.Same also in the past in Soviet Union or presently in China. The fact is that we are lookec upon with suspicion bu all parties in India and nobodty gives us ticket to fight an Elecion. DeveGowda was a Diploma Civil Engineer who rose to become Prime Minister by Default.Visverayya was the prime minister of Mysore who laid the foundation of technical education in Karnataka and also of industry . Whenever Engineers are at the helm in Technical matters thay have done wonders.
