Are Utilities Truly Exploiting their GIS? - In today's competitive global scenario, a successful utility must take maximum advantage of all its resources -- from manpower to infrastructure to information. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to integrate geographic data with other corporate data has become absolutely vital to this task.

I made this project of GIS implementation based on what Tekla Finland has done, for Indian Power utilities.

It has all the things that are being talked about. What came out of it is a systematic sabotage of this GIS implementation. The work was done at a lower cost than the cost of I code !

All sorts of cos jumped in and made it the corruption scandal of this age!!

So much so that one co was caught  stealing maps from  the government agency by paying one of the employees.I believe they are now in Jail!!

We can do all these things provided our intentions are right. All the money allocatedby the government of India has been wasted or siphoned off by crooks running these cos.

member photo To stay in business, the GIS service providers need to deliver high quality, cost efficient services with true competitive spirit. Utilities in India have started realizing the potential benefits of implementing GIS while utilities in North America, Europe etc began integrating GIS with their business systems, a step far ahead of Indian utilities. The Govt. of India through R-APDRP proposed with revised terms and conditions as a Central Sector Scheme where GIS has a major role covering Consumer Indexing, Mapping, Metering of Distribution Transformers and Feeders, and Automatic Data Logging for all Distribution Transformers and Feeders and SCADA / DMS system.

Let us hope such reforms strengthen the usage of GIS and bring in more transparency and sustainable business environment.
