Irrespetive of the what part of the world you are in and whether you are talking clean or dirty energy the Techno economics of smart grid investments, which will be massive by all reckoning, the viability will be justified by one and one alone- service reliability and reduction in Transmission and distribution losses which are expected to be halved and could be even lower at times. In grids where these are high such as in India there is all the more reason to switch to smart grid because we just can not afford the higher and higher prices of energy and we are fed up of offloading the thiefs part on to other paying consumers - a normal practice with utilities in India- all the time telling the regulator that they can not control the theft. While honest are getting penalized the thiefs are having a fiield day If some one tells me that it is fine in US I do not think I can believe him. They are there all over the globe. So antitheft softwares mounted on smart grid and their implemention will justify it by all means.Even if we get clean energy the above logic will hold. In india rural areas are not covered by metering so the energy usage is anybody guess .India and the enmeging nations can not lose time. That brings us to lowering of the cost of smart grid build up
