In my last post, I mentioned that there is considerable real science and some real scientists out there who disagree with the Global Warming propaganda. Here is a link to some of it that I had read before, lost, but was reminded of after my post: http://www.sepp.org/publications/NIPCC_final.pdf. Here is a story about one well-known scientist who disagrees and is having his university platform threatened. It is entitled, "Global warming skepticism may end hurricane pioneer’s forecasts": http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/2809
As I said, not all scientists agree on the topic, but there is a political/social movement behind the doomsayers, who accept only the "science" that supports their position. Not being a scientist myself, I have learned in a long life to look for at least near unanimity among scientists before deciding and taking action on "facts." Global Warming is nowhere near unanimity on the scientific side, only on the political one and that from one side of the political spectrum with political axes to grind. The danger is that the doom predicted is so hyped by the majority of media skewed toward that same political bent, that if accepted as fact based on tenuous proof, and put into law, it will wreck economies and social progress worldwide.
Now, I'll go back to puffing my politically incorrect pipe and writing about utility technology.
My name is Robert Cates. I am a retired Engineering R/D Director/Inventor for the two largest Water Cooling Tower Companies, over the past 55 years, and later a Consultant. I would like to give an alternative thesis on this subject from the viewpoint of a person directly involved in the Engineering Science subject of "Heat & Mass Transfer", the basis of the Gore "Inconvenient Truth" movie, etc...which he based almost entirely on "Radiant Energy from the Sun which cannot escape from Earth due to CO2 coverage of our atmosphere".
I agree that the Sun's heating of the Earth, by the principles of "Radiation Heat Transfer" must be rejected by Earth to the atmosphere by Radiant Heat Transfer principles, or it will cause Global Warming of the Earth, which can cause severe problems of over-heating. This "severe" over-heating can result in a relatively small temperature change which may initially cause issues of melting of certain ice areas of the Earth, if the ice involved is within only fractions of a degree of the melting point of salt-water ice, somewhat lower than fresh water at 32 degrees F.
Meteorologists, (weathermen) who have shown data (not sure of precision of accurate relative readings since the 1880's) which indicates the temperatures have shown a collective of temperature rise of less than two degrees Fahrenheit over that extended period have probably presented the correct long-term information. They also show the specific periods when unusual lowering or rises in temperatures occur, most importantly the rises in the 2000 to 2006 period.
Now, some of the periods of changes have occurred for specific reasons. We can only guess just which ones are mostly responsible for the temperature rises.
However, the only unusual items which occurred in this specific period of 2000-2006 would include:
A. Massive Fires in Brazil to clear the farms after growing season which are being used to grow agricultural crops, leading to a very large area being cleared before and after each growing season. This area of farming was said to be unusually large, perhaps up to an area a sixth of the Nations' land area, including the Rain Forest, allowing the Brazilians to make the Ethanol for their Auto Fueling needs. This was, no doubt, done to avoid problems in availability of oil at reasonable prices, coupled with their relatively low-cost farm labor availability in Brazil.
I understand this change in fuel to mean they are using specially-tuned and adjusted automobiles and trucks to allow the exclusive usage of Ethanol, with no gasoline, whereby we USA users have chosen to use only 15% of Ethanol at our fueling stations, without tuning changes. (My mileage locally went down 15% after this usage.)
B. Massive Fires in the USA Western and Northwest areas, caused in part by annual wind direction toward the ocean in the Southern California region, coupled with individual campers, et al, which started the fires by accident, with our firefighters unable to clear the fires for weeks or more. And when they do, they use huge amounts of "water" which become "water vapor" as it rises in the atmosphere. Other parts of California, Idaho and Montana also encountered this massive fire problem.
Another, most important issue, is the complete neglect of the Gore Environmental Company to mention the issue of the Fires or other means of solving the Global Warming problem. (He became CEO of this operation in San Francisco in the early days of April 2008, after his success in selling his CO2 reduction concept of correction to the entire world!).

GOING GREEN...CO2 IS NOT THE PROBLEM....MAN-MADE WATER VAPOR IS TWICE THE GREENHOUSE GAS PROBLEM COMPARED TO CO2, AND....
IT CAN BE VIRTUALLY ELIMINATED COST-EFECTIVELY!
HOW, YOU SAY?....
THE SAME WAY AN INVENTOR DID IN 1970, WHEN CALLED UPON TO SOLVE THE WATER VAPOR FROM POWER PLANTS, REFINERIES AND AIR-CONDITIONING/REFRIGERATION PLANTS WHICH WERE CLOUDING UP HIGHWAYS AND BRIDGES AND CAUSING ACCIDENTS WHICH SUED THE INDUSTRIAL PLANTS AND COLLECTED. (NINE U.S. PATENTS EXIST...ALL EXPIRED AND USABLE BY ANYONE FREE OF CHARGE, AS ARE THE 100 PATENT COUNTERPARTS ISSUED IN MOST INDUSTRIAL NATIONS OF THE WORLD)
THEN CAME THE "WET/DRY COOLING TOWER" CONVERSION OF SELECT EXISTING PLANTS...AND ALL SUCH WATER VAPOR CLOUDS (WHICH MAY BLOCK THE SOLAR COLLECTED HEAT) AND CAUSE FOGGING OF BRIDGES AND ROADWAYS, FROM LEAVING EARTH WERE ELIMINATED WITH VERY LOW CAPITAL COSTS TO THE INDUSTRIES. (LESS THAN ONE-HALF PERCENT OF THE POWER PLANTS TOTAL INITIAL COSTS!)...
THIS COULD BE DONE TO THE ENTIRE WORLD'S INDUSTRIAL PLANTS, INCLUDING CHEMICAL, REFINERY, NUCLEAR AND FOSSIL POWER GENERATION, REFRIGERATION AND AIR CONDITIONING, NEW AND OLD, CHINA OR ANYWHERE!
ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS STOP LISTENING TO THE ENVIRONMENTALISTS WHO WANT TO SOLVE ANOTHER PROBLEM, SUCH AS THE LOS ANGELES VALLEY TRAPPED GASES FROM CARS WHICH HARM THE LOCALS....THIS CAN BE DONE LOCALLY ANOTHER WAY WITHOUT DESTROYING THE ECONOMY AND INDUSTRIES OF THE REST OF THE NATION!

1) Do you have the absolute agreement you require (eg. ALL scientists agreeing worldwide) that we DO have enough time before anything irreversible happens, to complete enough peer-reviewed investigation to satisfy the coal-producing companies that there (is/will be) a global warming problem caused by anthropogenic GHG emissions sufficient to justify immediate actions? Because without that, I vote that we start now to do whatever economically possible to limit emissions until such data is available.
2) Do you have the backup data from economists that taking effective action on this issue WILL cause the nationwide economic hardship you claim, or is the hardship simply a normal "free market creative destruction" think such as is constantly praised to workers by Wall street.
The Energy Information Agency of DOE came out with new forecasts this week: Here's the lead:
EIA crunches numbers
for a new forecast
The cost of implementing the Lieberman-Warner climate change bill hinges on the availability of key technologies -- but would in the best case shrink economic growth, the EIA reported in an analysis of the bill yesterday.
In the body of the story, the EIA forecasts that"
GDP is expected to be 0.2-0.6% lower than business as usual, with total losses ranging from $444 billion to $1.308 trillion from 2009 to 2030.
Other forecasts are worse. That sounds like a whole lot of fun for junk science promoted by a political movement upon which responsibile scientists are very much in disagreement. My vote is to wait until the science clears before we undertake massivly expensive changes, which we could even regret having made at sometime in the future. There are far too many unknows to go charging off in one direction.

My skepticism overflows when the same people turn a deaf ear when I mention that nuclear fission power plants are a known and well proven technology that can produce electricity, ship motive power, industrial scale heat, and power for locomotives (either electric or potentially even directly). The people that cause me to dig deeper into motives are the ones who, after trying to scare me to action that transfers my money into their pocket, then minimize the potential use of nuclear fission as a tool in dealing with the challenge.
Say what you wish about the costs and difficulty of building lots of new nuclear plants, but the facts remains that the world built 440 of them in about 30 years, that they produce the energy equivalent of 12 million barrels of oil per day, that most of them were built with 1960s vintage technology, and that many of them look like they will be running for at least another 20-40 years. Seems to me like anyone who refuses to learn more, but still claims to be afraid of CO2 is hiding something.
He gave no reference to the extreme Forest Fires in Brazil and West and NW USA over the last 6 years, the same perion in which the Meteorologists reported a sharp up-take in the average annual temperature of the World. But, the air can only be heated directly by conduction processes from the fires and water vapor attending. The Sun's radiation heat transfer can only be felt by Radiation Heat Transfer processes. If the Sun's "light" can pass through the CO2 plumes or other water vapor plumes, such as those from Nuclear & Fossil Power plants, and other industrial plant cooling towers, then those plumes cannot restrict the leaving heat from the Earth's many different surfaces and reflectors...such as trees, highways (black asphalt absorbs, white concrete reflects, etc...
Gore did not mention the principal Greenhouse gas...which is natural and man-made water vapor (industrial plant cooling towers, etc...which is more than twice the sky coverage as CO2, which is more transparent from the Suns heat. If he did not know this, then he can be excused, but what of all the Science Professors of the World...are they not commenting???
Must stop for now...if you wish you can check my earlier blogs for more info....I hope some may take them seriously and save our Nation from spending all of the remaining money we don't have on this crazy idea of shutting down our car & industrial plant companies with restrictive laws, when my old patents of the 70's could easily solve any problems with the industrial plants in a cost-effective manner, but we must stop the forest fires for gasoline-substitutes and other agriculteral needs first, in order to stop the 1.7 degree F increase in average world temperatures over the last 130 years! (So, what's the hurry, eh??)
Regards,
Robert E. Cates
That sunshade would consist of deserts covered by mirrors that reflect the sky back into space. It would only be very marginal, though, since the main purpose is to generate juice from the reflected sunlight. Black PV may cause more harm than good. "black" deserts would definate heat up the planet unless more of a % of "black" was converted to juice, than heating the region by excess re-radiation. Get this, Even if 100% of "black" panels were to be converted to juice, the heat effect would still apply (even has the panels would feel cool to the touch) because of the laws of thermo...
Thus we should all stop using any form of energy and just die? No, just reflect more light back into space to counter the heat generated for and from electricity. I'm sure that on a global scale, this heat effect no where compares to the heat trapping effect of CO2!
