According to a report released by the environmentalist group, Friends of Earth, the UK’s electricity bills could add at least £300 a year per household by 2020, due to the persistent use of the fossil fuels.
The environmentalists say that the increase in energy bills is backed by "green taxes" and assert that the bills would continue to soar, if the powerful energy group “big six” quit renewable energy projects in favor of fossil fuels, including coal and gas-fired power plants.
The environmentalists’ report show that the electricity bills saw an increase of 30 % between 2000 and 2010, while gas bills soared by 28 %, mainly due to higher costs of coal, which increased by 71% and natural gas, which increased by 90% during this period. If this rate of increase continues, the report predicts that UK would be confronted with an additional bill of £8 billion a year by 2020, costing the average household an additional £300.
Green policies added £42 on the bills in 2010, while the “Big Six” pushed up the average energy bill by £170 during this year.
At this moment, the renewable energy is a controversial topic for consumers, as on the one hand they are willing to use renewable energy, but at the same time being afraid of the impossibility to afford it.
