The scope of Smart Grid initiatives needs to be broaden to include initiatives like Green energy and Sustainability. Currently, Enterprise initiatives related to Corporate Sustainability Reporting are targeted at share holders. Whereas, initiatives related to Green energy and Carbon emissions reduction are used in the context of improving energy management at buildings and manufacturing facilities.

Energy generation equipment providers (like ABB and Siemens) are expanding to own the analytics associated with the data coming out of technical equipments. IT service providers can own the enterprise market by customizing manufacturing execution systems (MES) and building automation systems (facility management systems). As Google eMeter and Microsoft Hohm are withdrawn, the retail consumer home market is likely to be owned by the Utilities.

The alignment of all energy conservation initiatives will facilitate standards development for effective realization of smart grid benefits.

It can also help in faster porting of innovations frpm one domain to others. Example: learnings from Intelligent building automation systems can be used for home automation, and improvements in mobile-based home automation technology can be ported to manufacturing shop floor.
