Information and Communication technology is expected to make lives ‘greener’ by making them more virtual through online shopping, teleworking, remote communication, teleconferencing etc see ‘Role of ICTs in mitigating the effect of Climate change’ at www.energyblogs.com/energytech. It is quite agreed that ICT play significant role in reducing GHG emission. But the most significant role the ICT-transformation termed as ‘Smart-transformation’ is expected to play in the recent future is to enable more possibilities toward achieving a considerable global energy saving through energy efficiency and to the high extent reduces the emission of GHG into the atmosphere.

Smart-transformation would significantly improve the rate of global energy efficiency in various sector, even though the growth in the ICT sector it self would continue to increase the energy needed for the sector to effectively drive the smart-transformation process. But the energy consumption would no doubt be negligible when compared to other sector of economy, similarly the GHG emission expected from the sector would also be insignificant.

Deforestation through bush burning, fire wood burning are all part of man-made GHG emission, but the largest part of emission comes from human activities to generate power, fuel used for transportation and manufacturing process. Significant reduction in GHG emission would be realized if smart-transformation is applied in all the above listed.

Smart-Grid, Smart-Motor, Smart-Logistic and Smart-Building would play a significant role in helping improve energy efficiency and GHG emission reduction in both power generation, transmission and distribution, building cooling and lighting, manufacturing and transportation.

Smart-Solution is expected to deliver approximately 7.8GtCO2e of emission saving by 2020. This represents almost 15% of the global GHG emission by 2020 estimated to be around 51.9GtCO2e based on the BAU estimation and equivalent to approximately 600billion Euros (946.5billion dollars) of energy cost saving. The table below shows expected saving from various sectors through Smart-Solution.

SN
SECTOR
GHG EMISSION REDUCTION
1.
Smart Manufacturing/Motor
0.97GtCO2e
2.
Smart Logistic
1.53 GtCO2e
3.
Smart Building
1.68 GtCO2e
4
Smart Grid
2.03 GtCO2e
5
Others
1.61 GtCO2e

TOTAL
7.81 GtCO2e

Thought GHG emission from the ICT sector would reach 1.4GtCO2e by 2020 according to BAU estimation. The above result indicates an impressive contribution the sector is being made in the global effort to lower the GHG emission and save billion of dollars worth energy losses unnecessarily.

We can conclude that smart-transformation would no doubt be the most significant innovation that will address and clearly bring about definite solution to highly lethal climate change and energy crises issues.
