Concentrator PV (CPV) manufacturer, Soitec, has signed a contract with the US Department of Defense (DOD) to build a 1MW CPV plant at Fort Irwin in California.

Construction work on the project is due to begin by 2014 and it will eventually supply solar energy for Fort Irwin, home of the US Army's National Training Centre.

The plant will use Soitec’s CX-S530 CPV system, which concentrates sunlight onto multi-junction solar cells via a lens and increases performance.

The project is one of US$7 billion worth of contracts awarded to 22 projects that were selected by the DOD from 468 proposals.

The proposals were part of the DOD’s Installation Energy Test Bed initiative which tests new technology to improve the department’s energy security, reduce costs and meet renewables targets.

Clark Crawford, Soitec's vice president of sales and business development in the US, said: “This project will allow the Department of Defense to showcase Soitec's CPV technology, demonstrating future government applications consistent with the goals of improving energy security and expanding the development of renewable energy.”
