Two companies created in Oklahoma that are now one took another step today to shed their Okie roots.

ConocoPhillips said the new independent downstream company to be created through its previously announced strategic repositioning will be named Phillips 66 and will be headquartered in Houston.

So much for Phillips 66 long time home of Bartlesville.

Why did Marathon Petroleum stay truer to its history when spun off by Marathon oil this summer??

For those who don't remember, Marathon Petroleum chose to stay in Findlay, Ohio.

Phillips 66 will have leading businesses in refining, marketing, midstream and chemicals. “Phillips 66 has strong brand recognition and value and it provides a link between our rich history and our exciting future,” said Greg Garland, designated chairman and chief executive officer of Phillips 66. “Our name reflects an independent spirit and drive – two attributes of our future company.”

But the name does not reflect that rich history.
