Complexity is good. Simplicity is bad.

That is the wisdom age brings. So if you are GREEN you should be pro-nuclear.

That said, the biggest barrier to more nuclear - the subtext and supertext of any debate - is what to do with waste.

Long-term it is to design nuclear power plants that throw of less of the milennial toxic garbage. That is why I am very interested in the fusion project now rising in the south of France. It is an unprecedented 7-nation effort to replicate the furnaces of the sun on earth. Nuclear waste to be generated by the technology - said to be ready mid-century - will last hundreds of years and not tens of thousands of years, like waste generated by today's conventional nuclear technology.

Short-term there is Yucca, the long-suffering, long-delayed federal project destined for Nevada. There has long been a debate on whether to just go with that one - Harry Reid not-withstanding - or go for two, with a second dump to be planted somewhere back East. One Allison Macfarlane, at George Mason U., geologist, said that Yucca fails to meet international standards because it may be in a region popular with future earthquakes. She says to consider creating multiple baskets for our nuclear waste eggs.

So Team Bush has just decided to tell Congress let's stick with just Yucca and avoid the distraction of looking for a second site.

Let's get on with it, say the polar bears who are not very fond of dog-paddling for long-periods in ice depleted waters...

member photo It remains to be determined if ITER will generate high level radioactive waste or not; many variations of stable fusion reactions bombard their surroundings with massive amounts of neutrons, creating large amounts of steel and concrete that remain "hot" for thousands of years. Keep your fingers crossed that the fuel used in France will yield a clean and profitable means to power our future.

member photo Fusion instead of fission, and seven nations involved. Sounds good, although if the likely time frame is considered, it probably is just another high level scam. I wouldn't be surprised if fission isn't capable of supplying the nuclear energy that we need as the base of a new energy economy, though perhaps the scientists of those seven nations can assist the French with their work on the 'fourth' generation reactors. Security problems also need to be given more attention, however hopefully not by people like Mr Sarkozy and Ms Rice

member photo Nuclear Power is being promoted in india with out thinking the consequences. We had the worl'd largest dissaster in Bhopal Gas tragedy where 300,000 people died and are still dying. The girls who were in their Mother's womb in 1984 are mature(24 yrs ) age, they are not having their mensturation periods, who will mary them how would they lead their life? We could not inform the common person that he should wrap a wet towel and he would be saved.WHO WILL TELL THE CONSEQUENCES OF A NUCLEAR DISSASTER LIKE CHERNOBLE IN A DENSELY POPULATED COUNTRY LIKE INDIA
dO NOT 60% POPUTLATION OF iNDIA LIVE WITH OUT ELECTRICITY
tHERE IS NO SOCIAL NORM FOR BUYIMNG FIRE WOOD/OR PAY FOR IT/ANY VILLAGES 75% OF INDIA LIVES IN VILLAGES/ANY BODY IS FREE TO CUT A TREE
PLEASE GO TO THE GROUND REALITY-AND DO NOT POSE YOU HAVE SOLUTION TO ALL THE PROBLEMS

member photo Um, Hari, your commentary about the danger(s) of current nuclear power generation technologies would be a point well taken on other blog threads concerning the inherent instability of hot water reactors, but we are discussing FUSION, not FISSION in this topic. Aside from disasters in science fiction (Dr. Octupus in Spiderman 2), fusion power is inherently safe...but VERY expensive if you lose magnetic or inertial confinement of the plasma! Cheer up, cross your fingers, and pray that you will see fusion power generation in Asia within your lifetime.
