When fuel cells are sold in sufficient volume to become competitive, they will transform the market from a regional oligopolistic market to a competitive market.  Base load generating units for conventional generation are so large they require investments of many millions of dollars each; as much as a half a billion for coal fueled units and more for nuclear units.  But fuel cells are small and they can be installed for a few million dollars.  From a market dominated by monopolies, the market for firm base load energy will become a competitive market.

The market for full requirements firm power has always had a bottleneck in needing low cost base load energy to be competitive.  So the market for full requirements firm power will also be converted into a competitive market.
