About Sustainable Solutions
All human activity viz., domestic, commercial, industrial, healthcare and agriculture generate some amount of waste. The quantity and nature of the waste vary with the activity and with the level of technological development in a country. If not managed properly, these wastes can have an adverse impact on the environment and public health arising from contamination of soil, water and pollution of air and through spread of diseases via vectors living on waste.
While there is an obvious need to minimize the generation of wastes and to reuse and recycle them, the technologies for recovery of energy from wastes can play a vital role in mitigating the problems. Besides recovery of substantial energy, these technologies can lead to a substantial reduction in the overall waste quantities requiring final disposal, which can be better managed for safe disposal in a controlled manner while meeting the pollution control standards.
